Gap Analysis

The Needs Analysis (commonly referred to as a "Gap Analysis") is a powerful systematic examination of what a company already has in place and where the "gaps" are. This technique should not be confused with a quality related assessment (audit) because it is more comprehensive. A Gap Analysis is an open, but structured forum, non-confrontational and involves input from senior level management and other key personnel. It is not restricted by the type of product or service an enterprise furnishes, nor is it limited by industry.

This technique can be used in a wide variety of applications and is typically used to specifically detail all facets of existing operations versus identifying where existing operations are lacking sufficient information or practices to comply with specified or targeted requirements (where you are versus where you need to be).
